The DJ didn’t kill the radio – crowdsourcing killed the DJ

Crowdsourcing is the new outsourcing when it comes to corporate savings. Outsourcing is a way of paying cheaply for services in low cost countries. Crowdsourcing is getting additional savings by engaging vast sources of amateurs and experts anywhere to do it for free – services companies once had to pay for. One of these services is DJ’ing. Via the company Jelli, Las Vegas radio stations now allow their listeners to fully control the content that streams over the airwaves.

DJing is not exactly rocket science, but a good example of a threatened job title, which once generated income and tax dollars. In a time with high unemployment, it’s wise to shed some thoughts on how products and services are generated. Crowdsourcing has the wonderful capability of maximizing research potential and keep costs down by getting input from a variety of people. But crowsourcing also has the potential of underbidding and undercutting expertise by delivering value to companies for free. A deepening of this trend will reverberate in ten years when the youngest generation start making their career choices. New technologies killing off old work titles is nothing new of course, but working for free for profit seeking companies is – irregardless of the technological medium. So, crowds of the world out there, unite!
